Volunteer work in community centres
Are you looking for meaningful and rewarding things to do with your life? Volunteer at a City community centre!
Volunteering brings new content to life and enables encounters with different people. Volunteering in a community centre does not require specific expertise or education. All volunteers are trained for their specific task, which in turn is built around the skills of each volunteer.
Peer support is available, as the community centres currently have a total of 20 volunteers. Read more about volunteer work in Kuopio.
Volunteering in a community centre
Volunteering entails continuous encouragement, support, guidance and, at best, life-long friendships. Volunteering in community centres involves continuous learning through both doing and peer support. Regular meetings and joint recreational activities are organised among volunteers.
As a volunteer, you get to participate in meaningful activities that bring joy to everyday life. Volunteers’ tasks in community centres may include being there during opening and closing hours, taking care of the cosiness of the centre, keeping a café or recycling point, and assisting customers in printing. However, the most important thing is to meet and greet the residents, inform them about events and encourage them to participate in activities.
“After retiring, I wanted to do something meaningful with my time. I have a desire to be useful and, at the same time, live a social life. I am used to being “involved in life”, and now I get to make new friends, too.”
AINO
Residents of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to the community centres. Visitors and volunteers are peers. Everyone is met as an individual. In addition to weekly activities, community centres are used for events organised by the City in collaboration with other organisations and partners. At the moment, both Männistö and Länsi-Puijo community centres have several active volunteers who participate in the activities either weekly or several times a week. They keep the centre open in the absence of regular staff. As a volunteer, you can participate in activities either occasionally or regularly, and you have the freedom to shape the task to suit your own everyday life.
Come on board!
At the moment, volunteers are needed particularly at the community centres in Nilsiä, Vehmersalmi and Särkiniemi. You are warmly invited to the community centre and to take part in the activities. Let’s meet and start by discussing your interests and wishes. The meeting does not bind you to anything. You can find the contact information for the community workers below.
We asked volunteers why they chose to become volunteers. Their motives included the desire to be useful, social contacts, the nice group of volunteers, getting a new “work community”, and having an active lifestyle.
