Pupils moving to and out of Kuopio
Moving to Kuopio
If a pupil moves to Kuopio in the middle of comprehensive school, the guardian must contact the principal of the local school indicated by their address and agree on practical details with them. If the guardian does not know which the local school based on their address is, they can contact the principal of the nearest school to check. The school’s e-mail address is in the format schoolname(at)kuopio.fi. You can also contact the Basic Education Support Services to ask about the local school based on your address: Eila Kumpulainen, Coordinator, eila.anneli.kumpulainen(at)kuopio.fi, +358 44 718 4001.

Moving within Kuopio
If a pupil living in Kuopio moves in the middle of comprehensive school within Kuopio, the pupil’s guardian must contact both the principal of the pupil’s current school and the principal of their new local school as soon as possible. As a rule, the pupil moves to the local school indicated by their new address in this situation. It is also possible for the pupil to continue attending the same school as before if the school has a place for the pupil and the guardians take care of any school travel costs. The school principal makes the decision on the place of a pupil who moves to a different address.
Moving out of Kuopio
If the pupil moves out of Kuopio to another location, the guardian must notify the principal of the pupil’s current school of the move.
Moving abroad
When moving abroad, it is important that you make an official notification of your move so that
the Finnish authorities can contact you faster in matters concerning you. In the event of a
temporary move, the municipality of residence remains in Finland, and thus an underage child will
be within the scope of compulsory education in Finland. For the duration of a temporary move,
interruption of compulsory education for a fixed period will be applied for the child.
Permanent relocation abroad
If a pupil in compulsory education permanently moves abroad and has no municipality of
residence in Finland, they are no longer within the scope of compulsory education in Finland.
When a pupil in compulsory education permanently moves abroad, the pupil leaves their local
school.
Temporary relocation abroad
Leave of absence for all stays abroad of less than one month must be requested from the principal
of your own school.
In accordance with section 7 of the Compulsory Education Act, for stays abroad of more than one
month, an application for a fixed-term suspension of compulsory education is submitted to the
principal of your own school.
In connection with the application for the suspension of compulsory education, the person having
custody of the pupil must clarify how the learner in compulsory education intends to carry out
activities corresponding to completing compulsory education while staying abroad. After the
decision of suspension is taken, the education provider or municipality of residence is not obliged
to monitor the progress of studies during the stay abroad.
If a pupil in compulsory education moves abroad temporarily, for example because of their
parents’ work abroad, the child may attend, for example, a local school, an international school, a
Finnish school abroad, or the European School while staying abroad.
