Tahko hiking trails
The Tahko area in Nilsiä consists of the Tahko hill, the Kinahmi ridge to the south of Tahko, and the Pisa hill and its surrounding nature conservation areas at the southern end of Lake Syväri. There is also a 43-hectare herb-rich forest conservation area in Huutavanholma.
The conservation area is traversed by a hiking trail, the facilities and structures of which have been renovated by the Tahko village association during 2021 and 2022. The trail climbs from Tahkolahti bay to Huutavanholma and continues to the Tahko observation tower. Huutavanholma is a beautiful and distinctive natural site. The brook passing through the area rumbles magnificently in the spring as it runs into the steep slope.
The hiking trail continues north from the observation tower, where you can take the stairs to descend to the bottom of the Mäkiautio ravine to admire the ancient rock formations. The Pöllölaavu lean-to shelter near the ravine is a great place to snack, and it is also equipped with complimentary firewood and a dry toilet.
The Tahko area is the most important tourism centre in North Savo, offering a wide range of sports and outdoor activities all year round. There are also plenty of hiking trails to choose from. For more information on Tahko’s hiking trails, please visit e.g. the Kuopio-Tahko website.
