Halmejoki nature trail

The Halmejoki nature trail is located in Ranta-Toivala, almost entirely in the EU Natura nature conservation area. Halmejoki is characterised by herb-rich forests, the most exquisite examples of which can be found along the streams traversing the area. Forest management work has been carried out in the conservation area, with the aim of preserving and restoring herb-rich vegetation and diversifying the tree stand.

The nature trail is just under two kilometres long and showcases e.g. the herb-rich forests and their vegetation. On the trail, hikers also have the opportunity to admire Halmejoki’s rich birdlife. If you’re lucky, you may be able to hear the greenish warbler or the red-breasted flycatcher, as both of these birds favour old-growth forests. The nature trail also provides information on the nature management work carried out in the area. The trail starts from the parking area along the Ranta-Toivalantie road. Along the trail, there is a campfire site maintained by the Ranta-Toivala village committee.

The nature trail starts from the parking area by the Halmejoentie road (address: Halmejoentie 67). The trail is waymarked with paint. At the trail starting point, there is a display board describing the area, with information about how to move around in the area Along the trail, there is a campfire site maintained by the Ranta-Toivala village committee. Please be careful if you visit the area during elk hunting season.

The Halmejoki nature trail is connected to the Pökösenmäki military history trail, which is about five kilometres in length. The trail maintained by the village committee takes the hiker to the historic sites of the Finnish war.
