1990s exhibition at the Old Kuopio Museum 28.8.2024 -16.3.2025
1990s arrive in Kuopio! Do you still remember the first mobile phones and worm games? The touring exhibition Ysäri from the Workers’ Museum Wersta tells the story of the 1990 decade in Finland through shared memories.
The crisis hit the Finnish economy and the Finnish markka was converted into euro when Finland joined the EU. Finland became more multicultural and travel became more frequent. Steps were taken to promote gender equality and rainbow rights. Successes in sport were a cause for celebration. People also gathered around the television to enjoy popular programmes.
The objects, archival material, memories shared by people and soundscapes in the exhibition take visitors back to the 1990s. They tell us about changes in communication, consumption and leisure. For the exhibition, material was collected from around 100 donors. The amount of material included is exceptional.
Ysäri is Finland’s first museum exhibition on the 1990s. It takes a deeper look at the period of transition, creating a space for sharing memories. Stop by to browse the telephone directory in the phone box, admire the toys of the era or get into the mood of the Hockey World Cup ’95 gold rush by taking a photo of yourself with a Havis Amanda statue silhouette.
