Council of Europe’s experts on good relations and inclusive integration visited Kuopio
Kuopio is one of the six pilot cities in the Council of Europe’s Good Relations project “Building an inclusive integration approach in Finland”. Other pilot cities are Vantaa, Hämeenlinna, Tampere, Vaasa and Turku.
The pilot cities have responded to an index survey on the city’s good relations and intercultural capabilities. Based on the survey, the cities have received city-specific recommendations for further development from experts.
Kuopio’s results and recommendations were presented and discussed in a workshop held in Kuopio on June 5, 2024, in which representatives of the City of Kuopio and the city’s stakeholders participated in addition to the international experts. The information gained will be utilised, for example, in Kuopio integration programme and the implementation of the municipality’s equality and non-discrimination plan.
About 100 different nationalities live in Kuopio. The largest groups are Russians, Ukrainians, and Estonians. There are about 1 400 foreign students in the city. Just under 6 % of Kuopio residents speak foreign languages – about 90 different languages are spoken in Kuopio.
